After-School Classes: Winter/Spring Registration is Open!

Registration for after-school classes is open! Both the winter (Jan/Feb) and spring (Mar/Apr) sessions are open for registration. There is an incredible lineup of classes. Happy registering! 

To register online, go to the Seattle Parks and Recreation website (SPARC) website.

1. Log in using your Login ID and PIN (Note: if you have not already done so, you must first register through SPARC to receive a Login ID and PIN--do this for each child.)
2. Go to the Programs tab.
3. Click the Advanced Search bar to open the Advanced Search menu.
4. In the Keyword(s) field, type "Bagley" and hit Enter. SPARC will display an After School Enrichment page.
5. Click the Show Courses button. 
6. Scroll down to find the winter and spring classes.

All families (including those who register online) must submit two forms in person at the Green Lake Community Center before classes start, preferably earlier. If you already submitted them in the fall, you do not need to submit them again.

These forms can be found at the back of the brochure, which we hope to have available this week, or you can pick them up at the community center. Seattle Parks and Recreation staff will check the forms to make sure they are filled out correctly and to see if children have any health issues they need to be aware of. The Green Lake Community Center is open Mon-Fri 1-9pm and Sat. 9-5pm.

Jogathon

The Jogathon is next Friday!

Friday, October 2, 10:30 - 11:20 a.m.
Lower Woodland Track, 5575 West Green Lake Way N.

Please submit the permission form by Tuesday 9/29! Otherwise, your child will not be able to participate.

It's a fun event for the kids, not to mention they raise a lot of much-needed funding for our school. Last year they raised $27,000! The funds go to the PTA to supplement our kids' education at Bagley, including health and fitness, art, music, the library, classroom tutors, scholarships, and more.

Kids ask their friends and family to pledge a dollar amount per lap (or a flat amount). Then they run their hearts out. The students will be transported by buses, but parents are encouraged to cheer the kids on. It's a blast to watch how hard the kids run!

Walking School Bus

What is a Walking School Bus?

Every Friday your child can join other Bagley friends to walk to school together! Students are picked up by volunteer leaders at a Walking Bus Stop along a set route, and delivered safely to the playground with time to play before the first bell. Walking School Buses are a great way to promote community, safety, fitness, and being green.

Check out the Walking School Bus map showing the two "buses."  One from the northeast leaves at 9:05 a.m. from 88th and Burke and one from the southwest leaves at 8:45 a.m. from 70th and Dayton. The map shows the specific route.

No need to email or sign up in advance. Just be somewhere along the route at the appropriate time and join in!

Bagley has a strong community of walkers (on buses and on their own). Let's grow our ranks!

If these routes aren't in your neighborhood and you're interested in starting an additional route, please email Brooke (brookedoyle at yahoo), and let her know where you are and if you have neighbors who might want to be part of a regular route. Contact Brooke with any questions.

Arrive early at 6:00 p.m. to visit the PTA tables in the front hall where you can:

• Sign up for the school directory through MySchoolAnywhere.com. It is essential to be in the directory if you want to set up playdates, contact other parents, coordinate transportation to various events, etc.!

• Buy Bagley T-shirts for $10 (cash or check). This will be the last chance to buy T-shirts before the Jogathon!

• Visit the Free Money table to learn about ways to raise money for Bagley. For example, buy a PCC scrip card for $20 to earn free money each time you shop at PCC (it works like a gift card that you can re-load with money). Another way is to designate Bagley PTA as your nonprofit of choice when shopping on Amazon.com. Extra funds earned help provide the education that our students deserve. The PTA Fundraising Calendar tells more about how to help earn money for our school.

At 6:30 parents will gather in the cafeteria to hear a brief overview of the school curriculum. 

At 6:45, parents will go to their child's classroom to hear more about what they are learning from their teacher. This is for adults only (babies in arms are okay). Child care is not available.

After School Enrichment Classes

Teacher strike

We know it must feel frustrating that your child can't attend the first day as expected because of the strike. Let's hope the two sides can come to an agreement soon! We can't wait to welcome your family to Bagley!

What are families doing for child care? It's a good idea to plan for next week if you haven't already. I have heard a few ideas and will post them here. Please let me know in the comments or by email if you have other ideas.

• Seattle Parks and Recreation FREE strike camps open to all families. 
• Seattle's Littlest Performers strike camps.  
• Pacific Science Center strike camps.
• Seattle Children's Theater strike camps.
• Check with YMCA and Boys & Girls Clubs. (I heard that Boys & Girls Club will be $15 per day next week)
• Fly in Grandma and Grandpa.
• Find local teenage babysitters who are also out of school.
• Swap days with another parent.
• Take your kids to work.

What can you do to express your support for our teachers?

• Walk with them at the picket line, bring food and drinks, carry signs, and wave at passing cars. This support is priceless. You can sign up for this.
• Attend a community meeting tonight, Thursday, September 10, 6:00 p.m. to support striking educators at Seattle City Hall, Council Chambers, Second Floor, 600 4th Ave., Seattle 98104.
• Sign a petition to Superintendent Larry Nyland to come to a  reasonable agreement with the teachers.
• Sign a petition to demand that Gov. Inslee call an emergency legislative session to fully fund education at the state level. 

Last playdate on Sunday

This Sunday, August 30, will be our last Kindergarten Playdate of the summer! We'll be at Greenwood Park from 2-4pm, and there will be cold summer treats regardless of the weather. 

This is a great chance to make some connections with other new families in our friendly Bagley community.

Wondering who your child's teacher will be? Don't worry! Classroom assignments are generally sent late in the week before school starts.

Jogathon - October 2 - Volunteers needed

Mark your calendars for this year's jogathon on Friday, October 2!

The jogathon is a fun event and one of the biggest fundraisers of the year. Students ask friends and family to pledge a donation for each lap they run (or a flat amount). The kids love the jogathon and work hard to earn money for their school. Parents have a great time connecting with each other and cheering on the kids. Most importantly, the money helps support health and fitness, the arts and music program, library, classroom tutors, and scholarships and support for families.

This event needs a lot of volunteers to pull off! For now, the organizers are looking for these lead volunteer positions:

• Lap counting: Coordinate and manage the volunteers, setup, and supplies for lap counting during and after the event.
• Appreciation lunch: Lead the appreciation lunches for staff and volunteers.
• Water: Coordinate volunteers, supplies, and management of stations during the event.
• Fundraising and community engagement: This is a new position to engage the community in fundraising.
• Field coordination: Helping the setup lead make sure we have all necessary items on the field.

New family playdates - Greenwood Park

Only two playdates left! This is a good chance to meet other new families and ask any questions that you have. Meet at Greenwood Park, 602 N 87th St.

Bell schedule 2015-2016

Bell times at Bagley will remain the same for the 2015-2016 school year:

First bell rings: 9:30 am
Second bell rings/school starts: 9:35 am

End time: 3:40 pm

You may arrive as early as 9:05.

The Bell Time Task Force recommends flipping school start times beginning next year (2016-2017) to allow high schools to start later and elementary schools to start earlier. The recommendations are based on research that shows that teens need 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep per night, and that later start times support this need. Most elementary schools would run from 8 am to 2:10 pm, while a few elementary schools (which have not been identified) would run from 8:50 am to 3 pm. The superintendent will announce his recommendations in October 2015.

School meals 2015-2016

All students are eligible to eat breakfast and lunch provided by the school.

*Update: Prices have gone up this year (2015-2016). Breakfast is $2 and lunch is $3. Milk is 50 cents.

You can pay by check, cash, or credit card using the PayPAMS system. For students who qualify for free and reduced price meals, applications will be available on August 1st.

Each child is issued a 4-digit pin and taught how to enter it on the keypad. You can write it down somewhere for your child until they learn it, or the teachers and Ms. Raylynn in the cafeteria can also help.

Children may be dropped off on the playground or in the cafeteria as early as 9:05 when school opens. There is a playground attendant and Ms. Raylynn in the cafeteria is wonderful with the kids.

Many teachers collect supply funds, so they can purchase what they need for the students. 

Some stores have general suggestions posted, but please go by the listings provided by teachers on the Bagley website (copied and pasted below).

Contemporary kindergarten supply list:

• The school will collect a supply fee of $30.00 during the first week of school. The Art program will receive $5.00 of this fee.
• Kleenex: 1 box
• Boys bring 1 box of Ziploc bags
• Girls bring 1 container of unscented baby wipes
• Thin Marker Pens - 1 box Crayola Brand
• Crayola Washable (not permanent) 10 Pack of wide markers
• It is helpful to have a change of clothes placed in large ziplock bag to be kept in the locker for emergencies.

Montessori kindergarten supply list:

Personal items (please bring these labeled items on the first day of school):

• A full-size back pack
• A reusable lunch box or lunch bag
• A full change of clothing in a Ziploc bag 

To share with the class please send: 

• 2 boxes of tissues 
• 1 package of Post-its (we use all sizes, so any will do) 
• 1 pack of unscented baby wipes 
• 1 package of Ticonderoga #2 pencils 

Each teacher on the K-1 Montessori team will take care of purchasing the bulk of the student / classroom supplies necessary to begin the school year. Over the years we have found this to be the most cost effective way to buy our materials. It is also nice for the students to begin the year with the exact same supplies, in order to avoid unnecessary conflicts and hurt feelings. These items will vary slightly for each teacher, but they consist of things such as: colored pencils, pencil grips, glue sticks, markers, name tags, binders, folders, printer ink, sanitizer, etc. 

The cost will be $25 for class room supplies per child. There will also be an Art Class supply charge of $5 per child for the year. So we will collect the total in a $30 payment of cash or a check: payable to Daniel Bagley Elementary, during the first 2 weeks of school. (If you can give extra for our scholarship fund, terrific! If you will need a scholarship, no problem… just ask!)

There is a playdate for incoming kindergartners on Sunday, July 12, at Greenwood Park from 2 to 4pm. We will have popsicles and ice cream sandwiches!

Before and after school care at Bagley

There are some great options available for Bagley families who need before- and after-school care:

• *NEW*: The Washington Karate Ballard Dojo is enrolling now for the After School Karate Program. They provide transportation to and from Bagley. For more information, call 206-784-3171 or send an email to ballard_dojo@washingtonkarate.com.  

• The Bagley Boys & Girls Club offers a fun, affordable, and safe on-site childcare program before and after school. Activities include snack, homework help, arts, crafts, and games. Hours of operation are from 7am-6:30pm during school days, 7am-6pm on non-school days and during summer camp. Fall enrollment started on April 1st for new families. Enrollment for summer tween camp kids entering 4th grade through 7th grade started in March. For any questions call 206-853-5297 or email Christine Taylor.

• Illumination Studio (ILS) provides a fun and engaging before and after school program with a number of movement activities to get out some energy, including Tai Chi, Yoga, and Fitness Movement. Students then rotate between piano instruction, drama and performance, learning-based projects, and yoga. Daily homework help is given to all students. The program runs the duration of the school year. Students may enroll at any time as availability allows. Hours of operation are from 7am before school and 3pm until 5:30-6 after school. Daily transportation is provided to and from Bagley. ILS also offers amazing summer camps. Check them out!

• The YMCA offers after-school care at the Phinney Neighborhood Center until 6pm, including transportation from Bagley. Registration has not opened yet. For more information, please email universityprograms@seattleymca.org. 

• The Bagley after-school enrichment program will offer on-site classes five days a week until 5pm. (A second class from 5 to 6 may be offered this year, but has yet to be determined.) In the past, classes have included Spanish, chess, LEGO engineering, coding, piano, sports, show choir, clay, watercolor, cooking, music and movement, broadcast journalism, and more! Seattle Parks and Recreation is taking over administration of the enrichment program beginning this fall. Families will need to register through the SPARC website, so be sure to sign up for an account if you don't have one already!

Many people want to know who their child's teacher will be. Note that teacher assignments are not finalized until a few weeks before school starts. You will receive a letter by mail with your classroom assignment about a week before classes start. 

For those families on the waitlist, changes are made continuously, right through the end of September. You could be offered a spot in your first choice program a few weeks after school has begun. Check your student's status at Seattle Schools Student Assignment and/or Waitlist Status.

Ms. Ayer, the principal at Daniel Bagley, recently announced some planning updates for the upcoming school year. Enrollment has increased by 25 students, predominantly in the Contemporary program. The enrollment numbers shift constantly, so the following classroom configurations are subject to change.
